Ok, this works great if you want to change a name value, but what if I want to add a name value? Let's say theres a drop down box with the names Jack, Jill, and James but I need to log in as Jane. How could I add another option as Jane? The original source would look like this:

			Jack
			Jill
			James

sorry to say sandeep da but i don't think its good that u openly post there exploit

earlier very few can access the students database now thousands or maybe lakh can access

so as a ethical approach of hacking , sorry if i offend you but u should hide some of the information there and let it be a news

or u r in kolkatta and known security expert ,so u can write an article for TOI also over that issue but i don't think its a gud way to teaching them ....................because due to stupidity of admin .................................. thousand other will suffer ................................ and my previous comment was to neutralist that post ,so that if one fail in first attempt then after reading my comment he/she will not try :D

hope u understand my point of view

The vulnerability is still unpatched.
Can't do much as the Sikkim Manipal Admin is least bothered.

Spread the news over all the sites with a reference to our link.
I hope one day when everyone is talking about their stupidity, they will wake up & take note.

@Arbu.

I strongly support you. Due to Time constrain i am not able to debate.

& Bank will never use an open source for any of its product (interface) as it is against "BS5577" Compliance . ASP may use same code for different clients (bank) and for different products ( ATM, CVM, mobile or online interface) but they are not allowed to freely distribute their code.

@Saurabh

Yeah , because at one one point of time, we've been nurtured by the same person :D

@Arbu

"let 7 as older as xp u will find much more bugs and ways of exploiting it "

Right ! it's the most obvious thing, with time, people think of alternatives, and therfore I don't deny this.

"well open source means its codes are openly available isn’t it if not then why the hell it is called opeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeen source "

You're making one big mistake here, as I said before, Open source doesn't mean open access.
Codes are there, you can work on them as much as you want, but lol, you can't just ask for the ATM machine, and start working on it, because the ATM machine is no more a code, and the ATM machine is the hardware to protect the code.

Clear this thing, Open Source means you take the code, and work as a coder on it, if you've the resources work as a developer, if you've the hardware, work as a tester, you're free to access the code issued under GPL.

"many of them only heared about linux never uses one like us but if it is secure then why the hell is security patches "

Nothing is perfectly secured , Linux community never claims to be secure, they claim to be "more secure" and security patches are basically made way before anyone finds time to exploit it. You see the developers are in most cases the one who find the bugs, plus these patches are seriously made for things like exception handling and assumptions.

Linux is more secure, because it is able to identify, which part of system should be accessed by which category of user, this is simple.
If you grant a newcomer with su properties, seriously no one can protect, but Linux never allows it on the first part unless forced.
On the contrary, this happens the most obviously in Windows, the administrator is most probably the only user in most cases, and the limited account is so limited that nobody wants to make one !

"well again about ATM thing if code is not available then its not open source there is no difference between a normal ATM software and an open source on so u accept here that bank ATM software cannot be open source ,"

Again, the ATM machine is not a code, the firmware inside it has the code, Open Source talks about the code, not the hardware, you simply cannot give open access to the hardware.
When we talk about ATM machine running on OpenSource ,we mean the code of the software, which is easily available to the community.

"open source do mean that code of the OS or software freely distributed"
Yes , it's like this
I want to run a company which uses an accounting software, now I pretty google search gives me some scripts for doing that, but since I'm a newbie, I cannot handle this, so I hire a code, he doesn't code anything, he simply takes that script, modifies it according to me, compiles it ,and then install and connects it to all the peers.

This is Open Source !

Another Example ?

I ask a firm to make an application to me, something rather new, they make that pp for me, but I don't posses any copyrights over the code, the firm has rights to distribute the innovative code all over the internet, and do what it wants, my benefit ? I get my work cheaper, because I don't have any copyrights over the code

This is Open Source

PS : And sometimes, I'm extreme in debating such things, hope you'll never mind it :)

well dotty

see one thing ,this is true and always be true that user friendliness increased or number of network increased the security decreased ,its simple common sense ,let 7 as older as xp u will find much more bugs and ways of exploiting it

well open source means its codes are openly available isn't it if not then why the hell it is called opeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeen source

about security patches ,people are shouting that linux is much more secure , many of them only heared about linux never uses one like us but if it is secure then why the hell is security patches

well this article isn't about only linux its about all open source and linux is a big thing in that

well again about ATM thing if code is not available then its not open source there is no difference between a normal ATM software and an open source on so u accept here that bank ATM software cannot be open source ,

about that social engg car 2 3 lakh things it was originally taken from direct from a cyber crime scene from california ,its just to aware readers to ,not throw there bills in trashes also for same thing russian intelligence agency was blamed they are searching trash of nasa and pentagon and find many more secrets

about open source =! free software correct but

open source do mean that code of the OS or software freely distributed

"Open source is a development method for software that harnesses the power of distributed peer review and transparency of process. "

this is not my quote its a quotation from open source . com

they know much more than us about open source

@saurabh

transaction is database based process and a database needs a platform to run or store its data and its OS

i told dev to edit my post i wrote this in hurry so ,too many grammatical mistakes are there

i only came to reply you guys and i replied via cafe

@ dot cracker.
Great job man :P
it seems that both of us consider open source to be the future.

@ JIM
please understand that transaction is not OS based :)
So until and unless the attacker is the developer/assembler of that ATM machine, he cannot take the money out from it.
Please revise the post. I am unable to understand most of sentences.
I would also suggest you to watch the movie named- "pirates of the silicon valley"

1. No. of Users

http://www.w3schools.com/browsers/browsers_os.asp

What do you see ? The % of Linux+ Mac Users is increasing, and what is going down ?

And if you compare Servers , it's 10:1 in favor of Linux running machines :P

2. User Friendly

First of all, I'd love to say, that user friendly is a tag basically associated with the GUI not the easiness of mess up things, so I don't understand, how making something more user friendly makes it more insecure , that literally vague !
Beside, Isn't Linux User friendly? well there are certain distros ,whose beauty are unparallel !
OpenSUSE ?

Talking in you language, Isn't Win 7, User friendly ? that makes it unsecure ? I don't think so.

3.Security Patches

Well, then you're clearly misunderstanding the power of Open Source,
how many workers are probably for the OS of Windows ? let's make it large say 5000.
What about any Linux distros ? you can't even imagine

A bug found in Linux, is more probable to patched sooner than any of the windows counterpart,
beside you'd find millions of people working on bug, when you're open source rather than those confidential workers !

4.

"Now you go to an ATM machine which has a software Which is open source ,Now as we know Open Source can be edited a cracker programmed your ATM machine software such that any transaction made he will get .1% of the amount or let say .001% this is what u would not notice . now tell me is it secure to have open source as ATM software "

lol, this is complete "lol" thing ! what were you thinking before writing this ?

Open source doesn't mean, open access for godsake !
and any bank running any atm, won't let a road running coder as the programmer for those softwares, there's always a thing called trusted enterprises
A code is just not bullt by a single person, but it's tested, retested, bugged out, and there are series of bug detection test, before it's even planned to release !

"now he goes to the credit card company and show same address prove and his new license ,they are willing to issue the credit card so they issued it as they think attacker was a genuine person ,now that person go to any car showroom and pick a car of 2 -3 lakh or he shopped for him,so where the bill will g"

life ain't a bollywood movie dude ! Credit cards are not thrown away !
and a person need not take out a nasty bill to prove his identity ! lol
In India you can get any indentity card for 1000 Rs, but mind you, that doesn't give a credit card, neither a car of 2-3 lakhs , lol

"Free means programmer is not going to paid ,so who the hell is going to work for free ,programmers have there own family and they also have to feed them ,so there is no point that they are going to work for free and if yes then they will not give full efficiency because there is no money in it .

2nd point is that when everything is free then there will be no competition so there will be no R&D because ,R&D department is only for making any company above in competition ,so there will be no quality and no seriousness at all ."

dude ! dude ! dude !
Open Source != Free Software

When Open source combine with Free softwares, then we call it FOSS

want an example ? RHL, is a nasty big company, which gives FOSS stuff, but it is supported by major corps , because RHL is their backbone !

Another One ? you said about R&D ? Remember Linux is developing, infact nowdays most of the so called windows features are inherited from the research done by the linux community, if there wouldn't have been any R&D , Linux would have been where it was in 90s, but that's not happening dude !

PS: Please don't post fiction, to blubber out things :D

thanx

@saurabh

its really nice to see a comment which is bigger than an article it self

i m not against open source but i m against the saying that open source is future
and about the point which is saying about ATM i added an event called social engg. to educate

people about that also ,

well he biggest atm scam was over softwares .01% of every transition will go to the account of the attacker and its a truth not a fact

also about google ........................................google earn its 98.5% shares by advertisement alone

and he wants MS out of his league so google supports open source

its more ever entrepreneurship kind of war not over softwares

well i m well aware of ATM cards ,open sources and MS OS

it was a discussion in HL one year ago and i conclude it here only

and you also know open source may grow but they cannot be future

and no i don't mind your comment ,i enjoy reading it

it was a discussion in HL one year ago and i conclude it here only

Hello Jim,
Its good that you made a post but its disappointing that you went against Open Source thinking.
Talking about your first point on number of users
I think you would like to clarify about linux and windows as linux kernel and NT kernel
Linux(kernel): NT(kernel)
for Desktop markets its 1:9
For servers its 3:7
For TOP 500 super computers its 9:1
Talking in terms of user friendly-
Linux based Operating systems are generally usage specific, if you are going for a desktop then you have Fedora, Ubuntu. If you take a look at the GNOME shell you will find there is nothing more user friendly, thought its still in development stage and is only available for the preview.
You won't find a security enhanced NT kernel based system, while backtrack is one of the most famous and is used by most of the security experts all over the world.
Take a look at the Ubuntu studio you won't find anything better than that for multimedia.

About Security Patches: The word ALMOST in the post makes a difference of around 10 to 15 packages in a kernel.
And the difference that each patch make is, a patch in the form of a binary takes almost a week of testing whereas directly running the diff file makes it better to understand what changes have been made and what is necessary for your usage plus the diff is a week faster than windows binaries ;)

ABOUT THE ATM's : Let me tell you the working of an ATM
The banks provide you a card that has a magnetic strip on the back that it reads information about your bank account. It uses this information to look up your information and decide what to do next. Usually this is to have you enter your password. After that, it's up to the program to decide what to do next. AND NOT ON THE INFORMATION OF MAGNETIC STRIP.
Take a look at the main logic that you cannot compromise the system until and unless you modifying the inner workings and this is possible when you have the physical port access that is locked now a days.

The new system is in the plan that will use biometric credentials to validate a user that uses a LINUX kernel to and a supported OS to cut down the ATM Machine's cost.

BANRISUL, the largest bank of Brazil uses LINUX kernel based OS, and they aren't getting compromised with that.
The major part of the OS in an ATM machine is to provide a UI for the customer and communicate to the server.
ATM card cloning is platform/server independent. You cannot be saved unless you use the new biometric or other forms of validation.
Yes I will feel very safe if I get a linux based ATM machine.

Regarding bill genaration, MTNL/BSNL and other telecom orgs like vodafone: they use Apache-Tomcat for running their application.
the servers are protected by .htaccess and rights to access the servers are reserved. NO indexing of folders is done.

and OPEN source application is easy to fix.

Regarding software development and payment of the developers:
The developers get paid for the support.
The RHEL is not FREE, though its open source. Most of the open source developments are supported by organizations like RedHat, IBM, Novell.
and these organizations get paid by the support that they provide to their customers.

Remove autorun.inf virus manually.

1). Go to any folder. In that on the top menu go to Tools--> Folder Options, which will be beside File, Edit, View, Favourites.

2). A window pops up after you click on folder options. In that window go to View tab and select the option Show hidden files and folders. Now uncheck the option Hide protected Operating system files.Click Ok

3). Now Open your drives (By right click and select Explore. Don't double click!) Delete autorun.inf and MS32DLL.dll.vbs or MS32DLL.dll (use Shift+Delete as it deletes files forever.) in all drives include Handy Drive and Floppy disk.

4). Open folder C:\WINDOWS to delete MS32DLL.dll.vbs or MS32DLL.dll (Use Shift+Delete ) 5). Go to start --> Run --> Regedit and the Registry editor will open

6). Now navigate in the left pane as follows: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE --> Software --> Microsoft --> Windows --> Current Version --> Run .Now delete the entry MS32DLL (Use Delete key on keyboard)

7). Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER --> Software --> Microsoft --> Internet Explorer --> Main and delete the entry Window Title "Hacked by Godzilla"

8). Now open the group policy editor by typing gpedit.msc in Start --> run and pressing enter.

9). Go to User Configuration --> Administrative Templates --> System. Double Click on entry Turn Off Autoplay then Turn Off Autoplay Properties will display.Do as follows: Select Enabled

10). Select All drives and Click OK

11). Now go to start --> Run and type msconfig there and press Enter.A system configuration utility dialogue will open.

12). Go to startup tab in it and uncheck MS32DLL .Now click Ok and when the system configuration utility asks for restart ,click on exit without restart.

13). Now go to Tools --> Folder Options on the top menu of some folder again and select the Do not show Hidden files and check Hide operating system files.

14). Go to your recyclable bin and empty it to prevent any possiblity of MS322DLL.dll.vbs lying there.

Now restart your PC once and you can now open your hard disk drives by double clicking on them
